Deepavali, the festival of lights, celebrates the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

Homes are lit with rows of lamps, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped for prosperity, and the day is filled with sweets, new clothes and fireworks.

In the Telugu tradition the festival begins with Naraka Chaturdashi — an oil bath before sunrise recalling Satyabhama and Krishna's victory over Narakasura — followed by Deepavali Amavasya evening, when Lakshmi puja is performed during pradosha kalam and rows of deepams are lit at the doorstep.

The days around Deepavali are also observed as Dhanteras (buying gold or new vessels), and the day after as Balipadyami, welcoming the generous king Bali. Kartika masam, the month of lamps, begins immediately after.

దీపావళి దీపాల పండుగ — చీకటిపై వెలుగు, అజ్ఞానంపై జ్ఞానం సాధించిన విజయానికి ప్రతీక.

ఇళ్ళను దీపాల వరుసలతో అలంకరించి, సంపద కోసం లక్ష్మీ దేవిని పూజించి, తీపి-కొత్త బట్టలు-బాణసంచాతో జరుపుకుంటారు.

తెలుగు సంప్రదాయంలో పండుగ నరక చతుర్దశితో మొదలవుతుంది — సత్యభామా సమేత శ్రీకృష్ణుడు నరకాసురుని వధించిన విజయానికి గుర్తుగా సూర్యోదయానికి ముందే తలంటు స్నానం. అమావాస్య సాయంత్రం ప్రదోష కాలంలో లక్ష్మీ పూజ చేసి గుమ్మం ముందు దీపాల వరుసలు వెలిగిస్తారు.

దీపావళి ముందు ధన త్రయోదశి (బంగారం, కొత్త పాత్రల కొనుగోలు), మరుసటి రోజు బలి పాడ్యమి జరుపుకుంటారు. వెంటనే దీపాల మాసమైన కార్తీక మాసం ప్రారంభమవుతుంది.
