Dussehra (Vijayadashami) marks the victory of good over evil — the triumph of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura and of Lord Rama over Ravana.

It is celebrated as the most auspicious day to begin new ventures, learning and the worship of weapons and tools (Ayudha Puja).

Vijayadashami concludes the nine nights of Devi Navaratri. In the Telugu states, Vijayawada's Kanaka Durga temple celebrates Navaratri on a grand scale, homes display bommala koluvu (arranged dolls), and on Dashami people perform Shami puja and exchange shami (jammi) leaves as 'gold', seeking victory in their endeavours.

The aparahna (afternoon) period of Dashami is considered the vijaya muhurtam — traditionally the best time of the whole year to start education (aksharabhyasam), new business, or any important undertaking, no separate muhurtam needed.

దేవీ నవరాత్రుల ముగింపు రోజు విజయదశమి. విజయవాడ కనకదుర్గమ్మ ఆలయంలో నవరాత్రి ఉత్సవాలు వైభవంగా జరుగుతాయి; ఇళ్లలో బొమ్మల కొలువు పెడతారు. దశమి నాడు శమీ పూజ చేసి జమ్మి ఆకులను బంగారంగా పంచుకుంటారు.

దశమి అపరాహ్ణ సమయం విజయ ముహూర్తం — అక్షరాభ్యాసం, కొత్త వ్యాపారం, ఏ ముఖ్యమైన పని ప్రారంభానికైనా ప్రత్యేక ముహూర్తం అవసరం లేని, సంవత్సరంలోనే అత్యుత్తమ సమయంగా భావిస్తారు.
