Makara Sankranti is the harvest festival, marking the sun's transit into Capricorn (Makara) and the start of its northward journey (Uttarayana).

Celebrated over three days — Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma — with bonfires, rangoli, sweets made of sesame and jaggery, and gratitude to cattle and the harvest.

Bhogi begins before dawn with bonfires of old belongings; children are showered with regi pallu (jujube fruits) in the bhogi pallu ritual. On Sankranti day, homes glow with rangavalli muggulu and gobbemmalu, gangireddu bullocks and Haridasu singers go door to door, and families fly kites and share ariselu, chakinalu and nuvvula laddu.

Kanuma honours cattle and the farm; the day after, Mukkanuma, closes the festival with family feasts. Uttarayana, beginning this day, is considered the auspicious half of the year for weddings and new beginnings.

మకర సంక్రాంతి పంట పండుగ — సూర్యుడు మకర రాశిలోకి ప్రవేశించి ఉత్తరాయణం ప్రారంభమయ్యే రోజు.

భోగి, సంక్రాంతి, కనుమ — మూడు రోజులు భోగి మంటలు, ముగ్గులు, నువ్వులు-బెల్లం తీపి, పశువుల పూజతో జరుపుకుంటారు.

భోగి నాడు తెల్లవారుజామున భోగి మంటలు వేసి, పిల్లలకు భోగి పళ్ళు (రేగి పళ్ళు) పోస్తారు. సంక్రాంతి రోజు రంగవల్లి ముగ్గులు, గొబ్బెమ్మలు, ఇంటింటికీ వచ్చే గంగిరెద్దులు, హరిదాసు కీర్తనలు; అరిసెలు, చకినాలు, నువ్వుల లడ్డూలతో పండుగ శోభిస్తుంది. గాలిపటాలు ఎగురవేస్తారు.

కనుమ నాడు పశువులను పూజిస్తారు; ముక్కనుమతో పండుగ ముగుస్తుంది. ఈ రోజు నుండి ప్రారంభమయ్యే ఉత్తరాయణం వివాహాలు, శుభకార్యాలకు అనుకూలమైన పుణ్యకాలంగా భావిస్తారు.
